Aside from the many things to do in St. John’s, Newfoundland, the other thing I loved about the city is its food scene. This food guide covers where to eat and what to order from some of the best restaurants in St. John’s.

There are so many places to eat in St. John’s, some of which are listed in Canada’s Best 100 Restaurants! One thing I love to do as a Travelling Foodie is to do what I call a Food Trip where I do a restaurant crawl to try one or two dishes that stand out.

Arancini at Evoo in the Courtyard

Located in the courtyard of the historic Murray Premises Hotel, Evoo‘s arancini gave an explosion of flavours in one ball! The crispy risotto croquette had oxtail, peas, wild mushroom and mozzarella, pomodoro sauce, Grana Padano.

Buffalo Pig Ears at Chinched Restaurant & Deli

Supporting local farms, producers and harvesters, Chinched Restaurant and Deli seriously impressed me with their Buffalo Pig Ears, one of the most addicting bar food there I’ve had,

You’ll definitely want to pair the Buffalo Pig Ears with an ice cold beer or their signature cocktails!

Coconut Red Curry Mussels at YellowBelly Brewery and Public House

A historic site, brewery and restaurant, YellowBelly Brewery and Public House served one of the best mussels I’ve had (and this comment includes mussels I’ve tried in Belgium).

Be sure to catch the chefs working in the “open concept” dining room, and have some of their beers to go with your meal!

Fish and Chips at Ches’s Fish and Chips

Serving Newfoundland & Labrador’s fish and chips for over 60 years, Ches’s stands out with their perfect batter on fresh fish and fresh-cut potatoes. Need I say more?

[CLOSED] Lobster and Snow Crab Salad from Bacalao

One of the best restaurants in St. John’s serving authentic Newfoundland cuisine, Bacalao served me the only salad I can eat everyday and will crave every day! And that’s their Lobster and Snow Crab Salad.

Located in the oldest house in Petty Harbour, just minutes from St. John’s, Chafe’s Landing got me with their fresh and flavourful lobster roll with overflowing chunks of lobster.

Octopus Saam at The Adelaide Oyster House

The first restaurant in Newfoundland to server locally grown oysters, Adelaide Oyster House has some very delicious eats.

Aside from the obvious oysters, it was my first time having Octopus Saam and I loved it. Perfectly crispy octopus!

Pan Fried Cod at Magnum and Steins

With a focus on fresh seasonal local food in downtown St. John’s at The Duckworth Hotel, Magnum & Steins impressed me with their unique and creative Pan Fried Cod. The chorizo sauce was amazing on the cod.

Scallops from Raymonds Restaurant

With Newfoundland and Labrador having access to some of the best seafood, wild game, and produce in the world, the tasting menu at Raymonds Restaurant is a must! It’s one of the best tasting menus I’ve had in Canada and I’ve tried a lot.

Raymonds Restaurant is definitely one of the best restaurants in St. John’s for me, and it was also in Canada’s Best 100 Restaurants in 2016.

In terms of specific dish, Raymond Restaurant had one of the most flavourful scallop I’ve had.

[CLOSED] Shrimp Diavollo at Tavola on Water

Owned by a Canadian musician Bob Hallett from popular folk rock band, Great Big Sea, Tavola on Water served one of the best shrimp dishes I’ve eaten! Full of flavour without overpowering the shrimp taste.


Seafood Crepe from Mallard Cottage

Another one of Canada’s best restaurants located inside a historic cottage, Mallard Cottage specializes in Newfoundland & Labrador’s seafood and wild game.

The Seafood Crepe at Mallard Cottage is one of the best savoury crepes I’ve had. It’s a seafood lover’s dream crepe right here!

DESSERT: Pavlova from Chinched Restaurant & Deli

Because there’s always room for dessert! Chinched Restaurant & Deli served my favourite dessert in St. John’s. Their Pavlova is like eating clouds!
